Schools and the
Churches
In the provision of education for children and young people in
England, there has always been a partnership between the churches
and the state, which was strengthened with the development of
voluntary aided and voluntary controlled schools in 1944. However,
from the first, churches have supported the education of children
and young people in the nation as a whole, not exclusively along
denominational lines.
Since 1988, national requirements over RE in the curriculum and
collective worship have led to stronger links being established
between schools and local churches. |

St. Michaels is the historic parish
church of Basingstoke, and is now part of the team parish in the
town, having particular links with
St. Peter's in
South Ham, All Saints
in the Town Centre (Southern Road),
St. Gabriel's
in Popley and Christ
the King in Brighton Hill.
Given the current RE and collective worship policies contact with
your local church may be appropriate for pupils, staff and parents,
many of whom already have a link with the church. At St. Michael's
we welcome the opportunity to develop relationships with the schools
in this area.
